Approaches we may draw on
Your clinician chooses an approach, or a mix, with you, based on your goals and what suits your situation.
Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT)
An evidence-informed form of CBT developed for trauma and PTSD. It works with the thoughts, feelings and avoidance that keep trauma responses active.
Schema Therapy (Schema)
For complex or developmental trauma, schema therapy works with the deep-set beliefs and coping patterns formed after hard experiences, helping you rebuild a sense of safety and self.
Somatic-Informed Approaches (Somatic)
Trauma is held in the body as well as the mind. Somatic-informed methods work with the physical side of trauma responses, helping to settle the nervous system and ease that on-edge feeling.
Everything you want to know
Is trauma therapy by telehealth right for me?
For many people, yes. Research supports trauma therapy by telehealth. Being in your own space can add to your sense of safety and control. Telehealth is not suitable for every concern. Your clinician will talk through whether it suits you, and may recommend in-person care, a GP review or a referral where appropriate.
Do I have to talk about what happened in detail?
No. Helpful trauma therapy does not require you to retell traumatic events in detail. Modern approaches are paced to what feels manageable for you. Your clinician works at your pace and keeps sessions feeling safe.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed to start. You can book directly through Synapsea. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be able to claim Medicare rebates. We can help you understand the options.
How many sessions will I need for trauma?
This varies with the nature of the trauma and how it affects you. Some people work on a single event over a number of sessions, while complex trauma often benefits from longer support. Individual experiences vary, and a session does not guarantee a particular outcome. Your clinician will work with you on an honest, evidence-informed plan.
