Evidence-Informed Approaches

Approaches we may draw on

Your clinician chooses an approach, or a mix, with you, based on your goals and what suits your situation.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

One of the most widely researched talk therapies. CBT helps you notice and reshape unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours, and build practical skills you can use day to day.

AnxietyLow MoodOCDPhobias

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT builds psychological flexibility. You learn to make room for difficult thoughts and feelings while taking steps that line up with your values, instead of fighting what you cannot control.

Chronic PainBurnoutLife Changes

Schema Therapy (ST)

A deeper, integrative approach for long-standing patterns. Schema therapy works with core beliefs formed early in life, so you can build healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.

Questions & Answers

Everything you want to know

Do I need a GP referral to book individual therapy?

No. You can book directly through Synapsea to begin. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP is optional. If you have a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, a Medicare rebate may apply to eligible therapy sessions. Eligibility is determined by Medicare. Coaching and ADHD assessments are not covered by Medicare. We can walk you through this when you enquire.

How does telehealth therapy compare to seeing someone in person?

Many people find telehealth therapy works well for them and value being able to attend from a private space of their choosing. Telehealth is not suitable for every concern. Your clinician may recommend in-person care, a GP review or a referral where that is the better fit.

How long does therapy take and how many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. Some people work on a focused goal over a handful of sessions. Others choose longer support for more complex or long-standing patterns. Individual experiences vary, and a session does not guarantee a particular outcome. Your clinician will review progress with you and there is no pressure to continue beyond what is helpful.

What technology do I need for a telehealth session?

A smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera and microphone, plus a steady internet connection. There are no app downloads. Sessions run in your browser on our encrypted platform.

Is my information and what I say kept private?

Yes. Your sessions are confidential and handled in line with Australian privacy law. Information is only shared without your consent in limited situations set by law, such as a serious risk of harm. Sessions run over an encrypted, secure video platform.
